These cards like other decks of cards have different suits and higher-ranking cards, these are called trump cards of which there is twenty-one. While there are many different makers of these decks today, the suits are still same, Wands, Cups, Swords, Pentacles and the Major Arcana. In a regular deck the Wands would relate to clubs, the Cups would be harts, the Pentacles would be spades and the Major Arcana would be the Jack, Queen, King and Ace of each different suit.
There are seventy-eight cards in a deck each with a different meaning and depending on how it falls in a reading it could have a different meaning in the persons life. To comprise these seventy-eight cards there are twenty-two Major Arcana and fifty-six Minor Arcana cards.
One of the first instances of the tarot deck is from a hand painted set in fifteenth century Italy, though it is doubtful this is the first deck of tarot cards. Though it can be certain that these were not the first tarot deck to be made, but rather the first that survived to be dated.
The tarot deck was not created to divine the future, but was created to play card games that were popular in the past; one game was similar to a game that was called “whisp,” and some of these card games are still played in some parts of Europe today. Along with another game named “tarocchi.”
The tarot deck would not be used a fortune telling tool or for divining the future until around the eighteenth century, when the deck became of interest to occultists like Etteilla and Antoine Court de Gebelin.
